Details on the quality issue of the engine base

Details about the quality issues of the engine base. One of the biggest problems faced by maintenance personnel in the field of shaft alignment is the quality of the equipment base. Poor base or platform construction will almost always result in machine movement.

Also not sturdy enough to hold up under the engine's torque. Then the alignment may not maintain tolerances leading to poor equipment. Excessive joint performance and wear. Precise shaft alignment may not even be possible.

Poorly designed and constructed pump bases and bases often have too much flexibility in the system.

Often, poor facility construction is due to system upgrades and modifications. Such as adding larger, more powerful motors or relocating equipment to a location that is insufficient to support the weight and torque of the motor.

Factors that will affect the quality of the background and allow for machine movement.
1) Insufficient or thin metal mounting base construction allows for flexibility in the frame.
2) Incorrect materials and inappropriate installation systems cause the installation surface to be unstable.
3) Old, aging, cracked or crumbling concrete and mortar materials.
4) Basic hardware is rusted.
5) Excessive vibration.
6) Too much debris and dirt.
7) Excessive shims or improper use of shims.

Some pictures
Below are some pictures showing poor or incorrect mounting methods. These are representative of the common systems I encounter when doing precision shaft alignment training on the road.

Although it is possible to put such a device into alignment when idle. But it is very likely that all of these systems will twist themselves out of alignment during operation.

The coupling images are from equipment that appears properly aligned, but twists out of alignment when operated rapidly, destroying the coupling elements due to dynamic twisting from the flexible bases.”
